Unveiling Famagusta's Rich History in North Cyprus:

Famagusta, a port city on the eastern coast of Northern Cyprus, boasts a captivating history, intricately woven into the fabric of the island’s narrative. Nestled between Capes Greco and Eloea, approximately 55 kilometers east of Nicosia, it thrives with the deepest harbor in Cyprus.

Famagusta’s origin story dates back to the 3rd century BCE, established by Ptolemy II, a Macedonian-Egyptian king, and named Arsinoe. Centuries later, the city witnessed a surge in its fortunes. A massive influx of Christian refugees fleeing the fall of Acre in 1291 transformed the once-humble village into a prosperous center of trade.

Famagusta’s control changed hands throughout history. The 14th century saw the port being seized by Genoa and later, Venice in 1489. The Venetians adorned the city with imposing fortifications, transforming it into the capital of Cyprus.

The 1974 Turkish intervention significantly altered the course of Famagusta’s history. Varosha was subsequently sealed off, bringing tourism to a halt. The city witnessed the arrival of settlers from mainland Turkey, with parts of Varosha being resettled after 1976.

Today, Famagusta houses the Eastern Mediterranean University, established in 1986. Ferry services connecting Mersin (Turkey) and Latakia (Syria) also include a stop in Famagusta.
