Driving Rules in Northern Cyprus

How to Get a Driver’s License in North Cyprus:

1. International Driving Permit:

With an International Driving Permit, you can drive in North Cyprus for up to 6 months.
To obtain an International Driving Permit, you must contact the motoring organization in your country.

2. North Cyprus Driver’s License:

If you plan to drive in North Cyprus for more than 6 months, you must apply for a Northern Cyprus driver’s license.

To do this, you must first obtain a temporary residence permit. Then, with your residence visa, you can go to a driving school, register and submit the following documents:

  1. Completed application form
  2. Your current valid driver’s license
  3. Passport
  4. Two passport photos
  5. Medical certificate
  6. Payment receipt

The driving test in North Cyprus is both oral and written and is very easy. Your license is usually issued about two weeks after you pass the practical test. However, during this time you can drive with a temporary paper that is issued by the driving school (or a picture of it).

Validity of a North Cyprus Driver’s License:

The license that is issued to you is only valid for one year and after this period, you must renew it. The first time you renew your license, it will be for one year, but after that you can renew your license for one, three, five or ten years at your own discretion. The longer the renewal period, the higher the cost of the license.
Steps for renewing a driver’s license in North Cyprus:

The applicant’s license must be presented to the officer at the department along with one photo and the relevant form (which will be given to you when you make an appointment). You must also pay the renewal fee. The officer at the department will give you a temporary paper that you must carry with you while driving. After about a week, you can go to the aforementioned department with this paper and receive your new license.
